I just got back from Dallas, where I spent several days in an intensive training at Oriental Rug Cleaning. Our teachers were Ellen Amirkhan, a fourth-generation rug cleaner, and Aaron Groseclose, president of MasterBlend in Denver.

Click the title or go here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb4v7XyzMos to see a highlight video.

We learned a great deal about rug cleaning, and especially about rug identification. I'm engaged in distance learning this summer, and then go back for some more hands-on work and testing in the fall to obtain my Master Rug Cleaner certification.

Got a fine rug? You know, people often ask me, "Does "Green" cleaning really work?" or they might say, "My carpet is too dirty to clean...I'm waiting til I replace it." So today I wanted to give you a quick look at how well we can clean even really dirty carpet!

I did the job in this video yesterday up at Vallecito. This restaurant, Pura Vida, had such a good year last year that their once-green carpet was nearly black with grease and dirt, so before opening this spring they called me in to clean it.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v22.nonxt4.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D4bb0684a190e3f64%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331389817%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D1E1BC4AFE11476C569784AB2C6402B1D35C02F50.27B34413E9D44B2691D48FD3026494473CD4329C%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D4bb0684a190e3f64%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DtF94iVwuiH818HCrUCcdy4rCLYc&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

As you can see, it's now clean and green again, courtesy of UltraSteam's "Green" Cleaning!

By the way, if you live around here, Pura Vida is well worth the beautiful drive up to Vallecito Lake from Bayfield or Durango for a delicious meal and a mango margarita. Often one of the the best remedies is having your carpet, rugs and upholstery professionally cleaned - preferably with "green" cleaning products that are hypoallergenic to be kind to your allergies. Learn more here about carpet and upholstery cleaning for allergy relief.

For people who are very allergic, there is a new Allergy Relief Treatment available from your professional cleaner. This natural, seed-derived after treatment works to denature pet and dustmite allergens for up to 6 months, so you can breathe easier.

I myself am mildly allergic to pets, yet still have a dog and 3 cats - and I saw the difference immediately the first time I used this product. (Needless to say, I now clean twice a year and use Allergy Relief afterward.) Here are some tips to help minimize them:

1 - Know what you're allergic to. Some people (like myself!) are allergic to seasonal pollens, and these allergies can often be helped by a combination of diet, homeopathic remedies and non-prescription medications. Other people are allergic to dust mites, pet dander or other allergens that are more common indoors than out. A visit to your doctor may be in order, or ask him for a referral to an allergy specialist, to find out what you are allergic to and how best to treat it.

2 - Minimize your exposure to your allergens. If you're allergic to juniper pollen, for instance, refrain from walks in those woods while they're putting it out in the air. (Or if you're like me and can't resist, just bring some tissues.) And make sure that you don't have a big fat bush of whatever makes you sneeze planted right outside your open window! If you're allergic to indoor allergens, I have good news for you - just check out this link about how cleaning can relieve your allergies.

3 - Consider investing in a good vacuum (with a HEPA filter) This will help you out some no matter which allergies you have, but especially if they're the indoor type. Cheap vacuums, even those that say their bags "catch allergens" tend to actually let a lot of them back out in the air as you vacuum. Get a good vacuum once, and you'll notice the clean air difference as you clean - and you won't be replacing it all the time, either!

I have two vacuum recommendations, both moderately priced (around $500)

We use commercial Sanitaire HEPA uprights in our company to get the maximum dry soil removal before starting to clean your carpets. The model is SC9180, and can be bought at local vacuum stores, or from us directly. The Sanitaire uses disposable bags and has a washable HEPA filter, an extra-long cord and lots of power.

I also have many clients with Dyson vacuums who truly love them, particularly for their outstanding performance on pet hair. You can find these at larger retailers like Target or at hardware stores like Kroeger's here in Durango.

Next time I'll explain a little more about indoor allergens, and how we can help reduce your symptoms!

Learn more about carpet and upholstery cleaning at www.ultrasteamcleaning.com

Learn more about fine area rug cleaning at www.RugMastersOfDurango.com

Carpet Cleaning Secrets of a Professional: 4 Must-Ask Questions BEFORE You Hire!

Ask these questions of any company you consider, before hiring them, to ensure a great carpet cleaning job!

1 - How long have you been cleaning, and are you Certified by the IICRC?

Experience does count - and so does education! Look for a company that can promise you experienced technicians at your house, that have been certified by the Institute for Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification in whatever areas (carpet, upholstery, odor, etc.) that you are hiring service for. An IICRC Certified Firm is even better! Bonus: Membership in a trade association (such as the Professional Carpet and Upholstery Cleaners Association) helps prove professionalism, ongoing education and industry involvement.

2 - What kind of equipment do you use?

Most carpet cleaning jobs will require hot-water extraction to get the best results...and, unless you live in a high-rise, out of reach, you'll want a truckmounted system. Truckmounts provide more heat, water pressure and suction, getting the carpet cleaner and drying it faster. Shaw Industries, the world's largest carpet manufacturer, requires hot water extraction annually to maintain the new carpet warranty, and they recommend truckmounts be used whenever possible.

3 - Do you use "green" cleaning products, and what do you rinse with?

In the past, carpet cleaners had to use harsh, petrochemical-containing cleaners. But nowadays there are new, "green" carpet cleaning alternatives (which often clean better than the old kind!) and are better for your family's health and that of the earth. They are more expensive, though, so many companies still use the old ones to keep costs down.

The other part of the question deals with the final rinse step. Many companies meter their detergent into the rinse, and leave whatever they don't suck out still in the carpet. An increasing number of companies, however, apply the detergent first, then use a clear rinse to remove residues. Soft water is always preferable - it will clean better and leave your carpet softer. But the "one-step" process is usually cheaper.

In the end, you'll need to decide what's best for you and your home, and hire accordingly.

4 - What Guarantee Do You Offer?

Make sure that the cleaner you choose stands behind their work! This should be a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how many companies don't offer an actual guarantee. My company guarantees you The Most Thorough Cleaning and Exceptional Service Ever...or it's Free! If you're ever less than completely delighted, we'll make it right or you don't owe us a penny! What could be more fair? Make sure your choice of cleaners does the same.

If you need Carpet Cleaning in the Durango area, click the link to see our website for more information and current specials, or give us a call at 385-8444. Unfortunately, some businesses are taking advantage of that fact by "slashing prices" - and slashing service and workmanship right along with them!

The truth is, we get what we pay for when we invest wisely - be it in services or goods, large or small purchases. Sometimes, the "low price" up front leads to a higher price later on - either through hidden charges not disclosed in the "special" or through shoddy work that requires re-doing sooner than a good, professional job would have.

When we're buying goods, like autos or books, we can hold, touch and examine the object before we buy it (which is a good argument for buying local!) A lot can be told about the investment we're about to make, and we can usually feel secure in that purchase.

However, buying services is a little different. It can be difficult to know if you're going to get a good job until you see the finished work. Some services, such as plumbing or electrical repair, are almost completely "out of sight" - unless water starts leaking or sparks start flying, that is! So a little more due diligence is in order. Here are some basic questions to ask any service provider before investing in their work:

1 - How long have you been doing this? What training do you have? (Experience and education count! Look for firms and individuals that have been certified by non-profit educational organizations in their field of work. Membership in trade associations is also a good sign...and a call to the Better Business Bureau never hurts, either!)

2 - Can you provide references? (Any reputable company should be able to show you comments by other satisfied clients. And it's always a good idea to ask around your circle of friends and get comments from anyone who has used them.)

3 - What guarantee do you offer? (At a minimum, a company should make sure you are completely satisfied with the work. But a truly professional company will go "the extra mile" and provide more than just the bare minimum guarantee of satisfaction. They will ensure that you are truly delighted with the service and workmanship that you receive.)

4 - Will you provide me with an exact, written quote before starting work? What will you charge, and what does it include? (Many service businesses can provide an exact quote before work starts. Some, like remodelers or construction trades, will have to provide merely an estimate, but any ongoing changes should be communicated to and approved by you along the way. Beware of companies that offer "ballpark phone quotes" without examining the job first - these often change when they get to your house! Also, make sure that compare "apples to apples" by finding out what different charges actually get you. There can be wide differences in materials, products and services rendered from one company to another, even when they seem similar on the surface!

These points apply for almost any service you can think of. Next time, I'll give you more hints for finding excellence in the carpet cleaning industry!

Get free spot removal tips and current specials at UltraSteamCleaning.com

Learn more about fine area rug cleaning at RugMastersOfDurango.com

Moths in Rugs - Cleaning and Decontamination by RugMasters!

I had the honor this week of restoring a rug with moth damage. That may seem like an odd statement, but remember, this rug was worth probably six or eight thousand dollars and represented many hours of someone's fine work!

The client brought it to us right away when they first noticed a moth on it, and so the damage was minimal. We were able to decontaminate it, clean it, and apply moth retardant to keep the larvae away from it in the future, and it turned out good as new. Have a look in the video!

Rug Cleaning and Moth Treatment by RugMasters

Learn more about fine area rug cleaning at RugMastersOfDurango.com

Happy Birthday to Joe! Have you ever spilled wine on your oriental carpet? Or knocked over a glass of juice on the carpet in the den? Have you wondered if there's a "right way" to clean it up? Wonder no more!

This week I'm bringing you a current video I just shot on how to spotclean wool rugs. However, the basic steps are the same for synthetic wall-to-wall carpet too:

1 - Scrape up Solids, if applicable.

2 - Blot up liquids - take a clean, folded absorbent terry towel and press down or stand on it. You'll be surprised how much liquid just wicks right up into the towel (see video!)

3 - Apply a safe spot remover. You can call us at 385-8444 in the Durango area for a bottle of our professional spotter (which is safe for wool, by the way) or use club soda, as I do in the video. Let it penetrate, then blot it up. Don't scrub with a brush, as it may damage the fibers (the carpet or rug will tend to "fuzz up") and wipe gently if you need to remove more solids. If it's a liquid spill, all you need is blotting - rubbing will only work the spill in deeper!

4 - Rinse - pour a cup of plain water, with a capful of vinegar added, on the spot, and blot it out thoroughly. This helps prevent residue, especially from inferior "grocery store" spot removers, that can cause "re-appearing spots". Turn the towel to a fresh clean side and continue blotting and turning, or changing towels, until you no longer get moisture transfer onto your towel. If it was an especially large spill, you can leave a folded towel on top of it with a heavy book on top to help wick out some more moisture as it dries, or use a hairdryer or fan to dry the rug.

This should remove most common spills from your rug or carpet. Of course, if you have an unusual situation such as pet staining or coffee stains, you may need professional help. Call 970-385-5777 in the Durango or Farmington area, to arrange pickup or to drop off a rug at our Bodo Park Cleaning Studio, and we'll deep-clean your fine rugs like the works of art they are!

(If you like the video, you can see more videos of our work and tips on carpet, rug and floor care at www.youtube.com/ultrasteamdurango and www.youtube.com/rugmastersofdurango)

Learn more about fine area rug cleaning at RugMastersOfDurango.com
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v8.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D97b9cdecb63546aa%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331389817%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D57792A037F1590ADB0119180028C01DBCBA4B679.2B26627CABE2B6E92B54B2DA4A7258E1B2CE204F%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D97b9cdecb63546aa%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DsPmQwN9w0xOuEl1calScniivm-Q&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Carpet Cleaning in a Durango Winter? Here's why...

Strange as it sounds, winter is actually a great time to clean your carpets - for a couple of reasons:

1 - Your house is closed up more this time of year, keeping dust and allergens circulating inside (especially if you have forced-air heat) Carpet and upholstery acts like a huge filter, trapping soil and allergens - but like all filters, it works best if it's clean! So by cleaning now, you'll not only beautify your carpet, but you'll breathe easier too! (And if you have allergies to pets or dustmites, ask about our Allergy Relief Treatment that will denature these allergens for up to 6 months to help keep your allergies in check.)

2 - Since most people are waiting until spring to clean, savvy consumers know they'll get the best deals by cleaning now! Our courteous, certified technicians have more time to spend at your home working on difficult stains or taking care of any extra work you decide to have done, and I offer my best possible specials right now to just "break even" during the slow months and keep these great people working instead of laying them off and re-hiring come spring like some companies do.

In fact, we're doing our annual "2 for 1" special right now! Have us clean and Scotchgard your carpets in February, and we'll give you a certificate for FREE Spring Cleaning of the traffic areas by May 30th. You can have clean, healthy carpets now...AND later! Just call 385-8444 to schedule your appointment...and have a great Snowdown!
cl

Get free spot removal tips and current specials at www.ultrasteamcleaning.com

Learn more about fine area rug cleaning at www.rugmastersofdurango.com

<link rel='related' href='http://ultrasteamcleaning.com' title='Carpet Cleaning in a Durango Winter? (Just be careful around the ends not to suck up the fringe.) And, flip the rug over on a hard floor now and then, vacuum the back of it thoroughly with a good upright vacuum. This will help vibrate some extra dirt out of the front. Then turn it back over (but not in the dirt that probably just fell out of it!) and vacuum the face. Then sweep the floor.

2 - Rotate the Rug every 6 months. This will help it wear evenly, and prevent areas that get more traffic or sunlight from soiling and fading faster than the rest of the rug.

3 - Spot Clean it with Club Soda or a WoolSafe Spotter. DO NOT use store-shelf products (even the ones that have "wool" in their name!) on woven wool rugs. The bleaches and color brighteners in them will damage the dyes and fibers. In the Durango area, just call us at 385-5777 and we'll be happy to give you a FREE bottle of WoolSafe Spot Remover.

4 - Have it Professionally Cleaned Every 1-3 years. OK, you'd expect me to say that...but really, your fine rugs are works of art. Doesn't it make sense to take care of them so they last longer? If the abrasive soils are kept washed out of it, a rug can easily last generations. Or it can be worn out completely in ten or fifteen years if not cared for correctly. This care includes a good dusting to remove the dry, abrasive soil that grinds away the fibers, and a gentle shampoo and "bath" to rinse it thoroughly clean. Rugs in high traffic areas like entries, living rooms and kitchens should be cleaned yearly. Rugs that see less traffic, like a master bedroom, might be OK with every 2 years, and a seldom-used rug in a guest room every 3-5 years.

If you'd like more information, or to schedule pickup or dropoff of your rugs for cleaning, call us at 385-5777 or visit RugMastersOfDurango.com.

Thanks, and have a great day!

Get free spot removal tips and current specials at www.ultrasteamcleaning.com

Learn more about fine area rug cleaning at www.rugmastersofdurango.com

Vinegar: Friend or Foe?

Hi there! Richard Carpenter again, with post-holiday spotting tips.

I'm sometimes asked about using vinegar as a cleaning agent. It can be an excellent cleaner - for some surfaces and situations.

Vinegar works very well to clean up pet urine stains. After blotting up as much as possible (if fresh) apply a mixture of 2parts water/1 part white vinegar, and blot, then use plain water and re-blot or rinse. On dry cat or dog stains you may need to allow a few minutes dwell time for the vinegar to dissolve the urine residues (which turn to alkaline salts as they dry.)

It also works well, in moderation, to clean Ceramic tile and grout. Just a capful or two in a bucket of hot water is all you need. For heavily soiled tile use a good neutral floor cleaner first (Kim at Tile Art here in Durango sells this.)

HOWEVER...

Do not use it on Saltillo Tile or Natural Stone floors and counters, especially soft stone like Marble, Travertine and Limestone. It will permanently etch the surface! (So will other common kitchen acids, like lemon juice - so be sure your counters have been well-sealed before use, and clean up spills promptly. You'll want to professionally clean and re-seal the counters every 2-3 years under normal use.)

I cannot recommend any "Store-Shelf" products either, as most of them have been blamed by my clients for damage, discolorations, or residue build-up at some point. Check with a local tile and stone seller for a quality neutral floor cleaner, as mentioned above.

If you have any stone, tile or carpet care questions here in Durango, call us at 385-8444 and we'll be happy to answer them! Thanks for your attention, and have a happy, prosperous New Year!

Get free spot removal tips and current specials at www.ultrasteamcleaning.com

Learn more about fine area rug cleaning at www.rugmastersofdurango.com

Carpet Cleaning helps Manna, and gets you FREE Red Ball Tickets!

Hi There! (Yes, you read right! This stops any dye bleeding.) Then call RugMasters of Durango at 385-5777 and they will pick the rugs up and take them to their shop for drying and cleaning, as well as dye restoration, if necessary.

5 - Call UltraSteam at 385-8444 for prompt, courteous service, and we'll extract the water and dry your house. Time is of the essence; water starts causing damage immediately to structural components, so don't wait days in order to get the insurance company's OK - we'll come out as soon as you call so we can remove the water and get drying equipment installed to return your home to normal FAST!

Thank you for your time and kind attention - if you have any questions about water damage, please call us at 385-8444. But what to do when it spills?

First, blot it with a folded, dry terry towel. Place the towel over the spill, and press or stand on it to absorb the liquid. Turn it to a dry portion when the first side has soaked up as much as possible. Repeat until no more spill transfers.

Second, use some spot remover or club soda on the remaining colored area. Blot as above with a clean towel. Then, use a little plain water, and repeat the blotting process.

Voila! No more stain!

If you have a small "do-it-yourself" carpet cleaning machine, this is the perfect job for it. Use it to suck up the wine, then to rinse out the spotter or club soda with plain water. However, you may want to use a dry towel as a final blotting step to speed drying.

If any color remains, call a professional cleaner as soon as possible. In the Durango area, call UltraSteam at 385-8444 and we'll be glad to help you! In other areas, look for an IICRC Certified cleaner at iicrc.org or at ethicalservices.com.

Avoid a Flood This Winter! Three Quick Tips...

Hi! Richard Carpenter here again, and this is the time of year that we start to see water damage jobs from frozen pipes. So before it gets icy cold outside, here are some quick tips to stay warm, cozy and DRY this winter!

1 - Check all your outside water faucets, and disconnect the hoses. Even so-called "Freezeless" faucets WILL freeze and break if the hose is left connected with water in it...and they'll break inside the wall, draining into the house instead of outside!

2 - Check your washing machine hoses. Broken washer hoses are the most common water damage we see. The hoses are good for maybe five years, whereas the washer lasts 10-20. But it's easy to forget about the hoses...until you wake up one night to water around the bed! Check the hoses every year, and if they show signs of wear, replace them at once - they only cost about $5-$10 at Kroeger's or your local hardware store.

3 - Water heaters are the second most common break we see, so check the drain valves on them from time to time, as well as pipes going into them, and make sure that the surrounding area doesn't freeze. Seems like most of the bad ones we see are at about 12-15 years old.

Finally, there are devices you can install on your waterline to sense a sudden surge in flow, and shut off the water until you determine the cause of the leak. Check with your local hardware store; if they don't stock it they should be able to order it.

And, if (god forbid) you DO wake up in a puddle one morning, call UltraSteam at 385-8444 for quick response, structural drying and cleanup by IICRC Certified Water Damage experts with over 40 years of experience!

Get free spot removal tips and current specials at www.ultrasteamcleaning.com

Learn more about fine area rug cleaning at www.rugmastersofdurango.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://secretsofahealthyhome.blogspot.com/2008/12/avoid-flood-this-winter-three-quick.html' title='Avoid a Flood This Winter! And, if it goes unnoticed for long, they can do substantial damage. They'll tend to feed down at the bottom of the pile, so the first clue you may have is when a piece of the rug or a portion of the pile fibers get sucked up while vacuuming, leaving only the foundation yarns.

If you find moth damage, or see moths and larvae in or around the rug, call a professional rug cleaner immediately. They can evaluate the extent of damage and the best course of action to prevent further damage. (They may also be able to re-weave the damaged area, or have it done by a competent weaver.)

The rug should be removed from the house and cleaned as soon as possible, and the house should be treated to remove the pests while the rug is gone, so that it comes back to a clean, moth-free environment.

After cleaning and repair, the rug can be treated with a moth repellent that denatures the wool fibers, making them literally taste bad to the larvae, so they won't want to stay around! (NOTE: Moth repellents are not poisons or insecticides, which require application by a licensed pest control professional.)

If you have an oriental, persian or tribal rug with moth damage in Durango, Colorado, please feel free to call me at 385-5777 for a free consultation!

Get free spot removal tips and current specials at www.ultrasteamcleaning.com

Learn more about fine area rug cleaning at www.rugmastersofdurango.com

Area Rug Cleaning

So...now you know a little about how to choose a rug, here are questions to ask any rug cleaner before entrusting your precious rugs to them!

1 - How long have you been cleaning rugs, and are you certified to do so by the IICRC? (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification - check for a certified cleaner near you at iicrc.org)
Experience and education are very important - you don't want an amateur "learning how" on your rug!

2 - How will you clean my rugs?
Fine wool rugs should be cleaned in-plant as follows: dusted and deep-vacuumed to remove dry soil, then hand-washed and cold-rinsed to protect the dyes and fibers. Don't settle for someone saying "I'll just steam-clean it at your house"!

3 - Do you remove dry soil before washing? How?
Very few cleaners own the specialized dusting and vacuuming equipment needed to remove as much as 90% of the dry soil before washing. This can result in deep, abrasive soil being left behind to grind away at the rug and wear it out, even though it "looks" cleaner on the surface.

4 - Will you inspect the rug for pre-existing conditions, and test it for crocking and bleeding before cleaning?
These are essential steps to avoid damaging the rug. Unfortunately, not everyone follows them. If your cleaner seems confused or doen't know what you're talking about, look for another cleaner!

5 - Are you insured?
This should be a no-brainer, but again, not everybody carries insurance.

6 - Do you stand behind your work with a money-back guarantee?
Of course we do! And so should anyone you entrust your rugs to!

Learn more about fine area rug cleaning at www.rugmastersofdurango.com

Area Rugs: Things to know before you buy!

Hi again! Today's post is about area rugs. More and more homes have beautiful wood, tile or stone floors these days, but most people choose to warm and soften at least a few rooms with a nice area rug at some point. As Durango's only IICRC Certified rug cleaner, let me give you a few pointers on what to look for when buying a new (or used) rug.

#1 - Buy Woven, Not Tufted. Turn the rug over to discover how it's made. A woven rug shows the pattern on the back, since the face yarns are knotted on the foundation yarns. Tufted rugs will have a blank (usually white or beige) cotton backing, glued to the foundation material that the yarns were tufted through. The glue will break down over time, and the rug will weaken. A good woven rug, whether hand or machine-woven, is stronger, and usually made of superior materials than most tufted goods. There are a few high-end exceptions in tufted rugs, but you won't find them at the local "big-box" stores - only, perhaps, in Scottsdale or other affluent areas where custom rugmakers have showrooms.

#2 - Buy Wool or Nylon. Nylon is the most durable choice, and has the most resiliency and stain resistance of the synthetic fibers - great for a playroom. Wool may be more appropriate if anyone in the house is chemically sensitive, since it is a natural fiber. Fine hand-knotted textiles such as Afgahni rugs, Oriental rugs, Persian rugs or Native American Rugs (such as Navajo rugs) will always be wool. Wool is very durable, but has less resistance to stains, so care should be used to keep it clean and treat any spots promptly. Silk rugs, though beautiful, do not in my opinion belong on the floor, at least not in any high-traffic area; the fibers are very fine, and have less resiliency than wool. Consider displaying them on the wall.

AVOID: Olefin (also called Polypropylene); though it is very lustrous at first, it quickly abrades and dulls, and is prone to matting down. Acrylic also does not have the resilience of wool, and is more susceptible to staining and traffic soil.

Especially avoid Rayon, often called "Art Silk" on rugs. The "art" stands for "artificial" but it is far weaker than silk fiber, being made from regenerated cellulosic fibers (usually wood pulp and cotton linters). A "cheap" silk rug is often really made of rayon.

If you have more questions on care and cleaning of area rugs, visit my website, RugMastersOfDurango.com, or call me at 385-5777 in Durango. (We have a rotating selection of fine rugs for sale at our cleaning plant.) There is also a more in-depth rug link below, and future posts will cover spot cleaning options for your fine rugs.

Interested in Rug Cleaning? Today's post is about odors.

Some odors are great - like a fresh bouquet of flowers. But some aren't so great, such as skunk or pet odors or even cigarette smoke.

There are a couple of options if you have unwanted odors in your house. You can try to cover them up, with air fresheners or deodorizers, for instance. This may work well for light or temporary odors (like a guest's cigar.) But for heavier or more permanent odors, you'll need to remove the source.

Skunk - This is one we see a few times each year, often after the family dog gets into a little wilderness fun in your neighborhood! Any affected carpets, upholstery or drapes should be professionally cleaned and deodorized with a specialized product to neutralize the skunk odor molecules. The pet(s), if applicable, should be washed thoroughly before being allowed back into the house, and yes, tomato juice works (though it may require repeated uses, depending on the strength of the attack) and there are also anti-skunk washes available at your local pet store. Ozone treatments may be used on the house in severe cases (see smoke, below)

Pet Urine - This will often require professional cleaning also. Light odor, just in the face fibers of the carpet, may be treated with enzyme products from your local pet store, or with a white vinegar and water (1part vinegar/4parts water) mixture to neutralize the urine salts. Blot out thoroughly, then apply plain water to rinse and re-blot.

Heavier odor will usually be in the pad below the carpet, and often in the subfloor as well. This may require replacement of carpet or pad, as well as cleaning and sealing of the subfloor. Ozone also works well in severe cases.

Cigarette/cigar smoke - This is a pernicious odor since it is literally from a pollutant that wafts about in the air! Cleaning of soft lines (carpet, upholstery, drapes) is recommended, followed by an ozone soak of the premises for at least 24 hours (48 if severe). Ozone is 3 oxygen molecules joined together. The 3rd molecule is unstable, and breaks off when a malodor is encountered, joining with that malodor and chemically changing it so that it no longer smells! (It also destroys bacteria and microorganisms.) Ask your cleaner for a machine with Corona Discharge, to avoid damaging rubber materials in the house. (If they don't know what you're talking about, find another cleaner!)

NOTE: It is required that you leave the house during the ozone treatment - high concentrations are an upper respiratory irritant. Plan to stay away overnight while the house is being treated.

UltraSteam (ultrasteamcleaning.com) can provide these services and more, if you live in the Durango Colorado area. In other parts of the country, check ethicalservices.com or angieslist for local cleaners with good references.

Hazy Daze: Efflorescence on Tile

Have you ever over-watered a plant on your Saltillo Tile floor, and noticed after a few weeks that there's a kind of light haze in that area all of a sudden? That...doesn't mop away? Or that the stone in your gorgeous shower has white spots and streaks? Or the brick retaining wall out front was really beautiful until the first few hard rains - and now it looks like birds sat on it and , ahem, you get the idea.

In our cleaning adventures, we occasionally encounter this problem. There are solutions, some that you can employ and some that may require our help.

The name for this haze is Efflorescence, and it is caused by mineral salts in the stone, brick or grout being liberated by excessive moisture and wicking out to the surface where they dry. (If you have hard water this only aggravates the problem, since there are minerals in it as well that tend to build up on these hard surfaces.)

The good news is that ceramic tile (glazed or porcelain) is pretty much invulnerable, being fired and sealed on the surface. If hard water builds up (in a shower, say) you can use a safe acidic cleaner to remove it without damaging the tile. Same for the grout in between the tiles, and a soft wire brush may improve your results on the grout in extreme cases. NOTE: Read the label directions carefully, wear protective gloves and always provide adequate ventilation when using any cleaning products! The grout should be sealed with an impregnating sealer after you've achieved the desired results.

Brick, such as on retaining walls, can also be addressed with a wire brush or wheel, followed by a cloth dampened with an acidic product designed for this purpose. Don't "rinse" the brick with water afterward - the moisture will only re-activate the salts. Follow this by sealing with an impregnating sealer; this will prevent moisture getting in or out of the brick.

Saltillo tile is very soft, so DO NOT use a wire or other aggressive brush on it - you'll take the surface of the tile right off! Go with a dry green pad to buff off the first layer, then a dampened acidic cloth. An impregnating sealer is preferred for Saltillo, but if you prefer a more glossy finish then use a concrete sealer or an acrylic floor finish that are approved for Saltillo. DO NOT MIX different finishes, or apply them over each other. Also, be aware that with topical, gloss finishes, you'll need to maintain them more (spray-buffing) and be willing to strip and re-coat eventually in order to repair a worn finish. This can be time and cost-intensive.

Click here to see Saltillo Tile Cleaning by UltraSteam

...or here for more information on our Stone, Tile and Grout Cleaning

...or here for Carpet Cleaning in Durango, Bayfield and Hesperus
Next Time: Efflorescence on Natural Stone...

A Healthy Home Starts with A Healthy You!

Today, a quick detour from my normal cleaning-related posts. Have you ever wondered, when we came to clean for you, what keeps servicepeople like myself lean and energetic?

Well, credit where it's due, The Steaming Bean wakes me up in the morning (and sometimes in the afternoon!) But exercise and good nutrition play a big part in keeping me physically fit and mentally alert and focused.

Of course, we all get a pretty good workout every day while cleaning your carpet, upholstery, stone, tile and grout. But I lift weights regularly and run, as well. And the truth is, all the exercise in the world won't help much without proper nutrition. So I follow Bill Phillips' "Eating for Life" plan - I try to eat 5-6 smaller meals per day, with a balance of lean protein such as lean meat, chicken and fish or cottage cheese, and quality carbohydrates such as potatoes, yams, and whole grains, as well as several servings of green vegetables. I'm also fond of adding flaxseed to my oatmeal and the occasional weekend batch of cookies.

Did You Know...Lots of "vegetables" are actually carbs? Corn, peas, beans...all used to show up on my plate as the "vegetable" of the meal, until I read "Body for Life" and realized that they were actually carbohydrates (albeit good ones!) Now I make sure to eat more broccoli, brussels sprouts, spinach and other green leafy vegetables.

I find that a good multivitamin first thing in the morning works wonders on my day, too! After all, exercise is the "spark" and nutrition is the "fuel" for your body's peak performance...one of them does little good without the other!

If you're interested in learning more about Bill Phillips, log onto www.bodyforlife.com and check out the exercise and eating programs there. And if your house needs cleaning, log onto www.ethicalservices.com, or www.ultrasteamcleaning.com if you live in Durango, Colorado!

VOCs and Carcinogens, Oh My! Green Your Home With New Cleaning Products

Housecleaning...it should make your home healthier, right? After all, you're taking away the dirt and allergens and germs from your indoor environment. But hold on, Cinderella! Read the ingredient labels on your household cleaners to make sure you're not doing as much harm to yourself as good!

If they contain 2-Butoxyethanol (as in some window and bathroom cleaners) or Glycol Ether, (ditto) or Nitriloacetates, you're getting a nose full of nasty when you clean! The first two are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which can cause nasal irritation, aggravate asthma or other breathing problems, and contribute to diseases like cancer. The last one is a suspected carcinogen (almost certainly causes cancer).

That's bad enough if you're the only one using them...but what if you're pregnant? Cleaning with Baby? Or teaching the ten-year-old some responsibility by having them clean the toilet? Their young systems are even more susceptible to damage by these strong chemicals.

There's good news though - more and more manufacturers are phasing out these types of ingredients, or at least giving you a choice. There are a number of new, "Green" cleaning products around today that work just as well (or better) than the old petrochemicals, and without the nasty smells and side effects. Look for these at your local store:

Seventh Generation has been making "Green" cleaning products for quite a while now. I personally use and like their dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent powder.

Ecover has a similiar line; their laundry prewash has worked well for me.

Clorox had a new line of products on the shelf when I stopped in at the store the other day, and our office now has GreenWorks bathroom and toilet cleaners on trial! (So far, so good...)

And last but not least, Target has a line of environmentally friendly cleaners getting rave reviews called Method. Bonus: the packaging looks really cool, too...kind of like if Apple designed cleaning products!

Don't forget, you have similiar options with other aspects of your cleaning now. Ultrasteam Professional Cleaning in Durango offers "Green" cleaning for carpets, upholstery, stone, tile and grout. (Website: ultrasteamcleaning.com ) Some local window washers and housecleaning services do, too. Do your research and hire accordingly - for the health of the earth and your family!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://secretsofahealthyhome.blogspot.com/2008/03/vocs-and-carcinogens-oh-my-green-your.html' title='VOCs and Carcinogens, Oh My! Dirt is an abrasive - like sandpaper - and "cuts" into the fibers of your carpet and rugs as you walk on them. This results in premature wear, leading to the need for replacement long before it should have been necessary with proper maintenance.

Not to mention the "uglied-out" areas in the traffic lanes where the pile just doesn't ever look right, even after being cleaned.

The good news - it doesn't have to be this way!

Vacuuming is the best remedy. Tell the kids to stop watching TV and put the Hoover in their hands. Schedules will vary, but if you have, say, two kids and a pet or two, you should vacuum high traffic rooms like the living and dining areas and halls once daily, every 2nd day at most. Then do a good whole-house job once a week.

Now the secret of how to get more dirt out of your rugs and carpet...every time you vacuum!

It's very simple, really...a time-tested trick of professional carpet cleaners and housecleaning services. Vacuum in opposite directions, at right angles to how you just did it. This way the brush can agitate the nap more fully, and dirt is removed from a couple of different directions, instead of just one. In really heavy traffic areas, like right in front of the entry doors, do three directions or even four.

Keep your home clean longer...

Vacuuming is the best defense against dirt and allergens (provided you have a good unit with HEPA filtration) as well as increasing the life of the carpet. Contrary to popular belief, you can't "overvacuum". Carpet and rugs were made to be vacuumed...and then professionally cleaned when need be! If you live in Durango and need in-plant rug cleaning, call RugMasters of Durango at 385-5777 for cloud-soft, fluffy-clean rugs. And if your carpet is finally in need of a professional cleaning, call Ultrasteam at 385-8444. (Maybe a little less here in Durango!)

Pollutants indoors are 1000 times more likely to reach your lungs than pollutants outdoors.

Many homes have 25 to 100 times more pollutants in them than polluted outdoor air.

Both biological pollutants (molds, bacteria, viruses, pet dander etc.) and chemical pollutants like VOC's are fouling our indoor air.

The bad effects on our health can range from mild irritations to our eyes and throat…to lifelong allergies, asthma, even cancers.

Just reading that makes me want to run out and buy an expensive air filtration system for my home! But did you know there is a natural, inexpensive way for you to have clean indoor air?

This information was found on Wikipedia under the subject of “air-filtering plants”. It’s a list compiled by NASA as part of a study they did to research ways to clean the air in space stations. (No opening a window for some fresh air up there!) In fact...you probably can’t find air any more stagnant than that!

These plants not only absorb carbon dioxide and release clean oxygen, but they can eliminate harmful carcinogens found in polluted indoor air like benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. Here are some of the plants listed in the study...

1.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; Be sure to water and feed your plants regularly...and the money you spend will still be less than for mechanical air filters, and the plants will beautify your home, too!

Remember too that simply cleaning your carpet and upholstery will drastically reduce the allergen and pollutant load in your home, so vacuum frequently and clean every 6-12 months. (Most carpet cleaners will offer a discount or maintenance program for clients who want to keep their house cleaned regularly, so ask your local cleaner about that option.) It depends on what you're allergic to.

In our Southwest Colorado area, seasonal allergies to various pollens and plants can (and do) strike anywhere, especially outdoors. There's not much that cleaning your home can do for these allergies. Consult your health practitioner for possible treatments.

But if you or a family member is allergic to pets or dustmites, or has asthma, simply cleaning house will provide enormous relief! Allergens produced by cats (Fel d 1) dogs (Can f 1) or dust mites (Der f 1, Der p 1) can be cleaned out of your carpet, upholstery and mattresses by a competent professional cleaner using hot water extraction.

"Exposure to allergens produced by dust mites - found in nearly every indoor environment - can lead to asthma in children who are predisposed to developing the disease."
- Institute of Medicine

Dust mites feed on our dead skin cells, and are not, in and of themselves, harmful - but there are allergens in their tiny dead bodies and waste that cause a reaction in some people and aggravate asthma in others. A dust mite will produce 200 times its own body weight in feces during its short lifetime! Mattresses contain 60% of the dust mites found in the home.

If you have asthma or allergies, the first step is to clean your mattress thoroughly, wash pillows (or get new ones), then use hypoallergenic mattress and pillow covers designed to keep the mites out. Launder the bedding frequently to remove accumulated mites, waste and other allergens.

Then have the carpet and upholstery cleaned - preferably twice a year - with hot water extraction, and consider applying ResponsibleCare Allergy Relief Treatment, a natural, seed-based product which denatures the allergens for up to 6 months to prevent allergic reactions.

This is how it works: picture an allergen as a key, and the allergic reaction as a lock. When the right "key" fits a lock, the sneezing and wheezing starts! The Allergy Relief Treatment changes the shape of the allergen proteins so they no longer "fit the lock" of your allergic reaction. Carpet and upholstery acts as a "trap" for many of these pollutants, but like all filters, it works best when it's clean. If you haven't cleaned for a while, you'll be amazed at how "spring-fresh" we can make your home feel while it's still white outside!

3-Fast Drying - If your cleaning company is qualified and knowledgeable, they'll take advantage of the dry winter air to help dry your carpet faster! Just open a few windows just a crack, turn on ceiling fans, leave the thermostat around 70-72, and it'll be dry almost as fast as summer. (And if your company utilizes the new downdraft drying fans, like Ultrasteam of Durango does, each room will be dry usually within an hour or two!)

4-The Best Deals - Because this is the slow season for cleaning companies, this is when they run their best specials. So, if you're on a budget, this is a perfect time to stretch your cleaning dollar! If you live in Durango, Colorado, log on to www.ultrasteamcleaning.com to see learn more about our company and see us in action. If you live elsewhere, try www.ethicalservices.com to find a pre-screened professional cleaner in your area!
